Coarse pulmonary opacities in keeping with several bilateral sub segmental atelectasis as well as several areas of air trapping consistent with meconium aspiration. Also note right pleural effusion.
Case Discussion
There are bilateral, coarse pulmonary opacities on this neonatal chest film. With the history of a term baby and a difficult delivery, the primary diagnosis is that of meconium aspiration.
The aspirated meconium causes a chemical pneumonitis which can be severe and take a long time to resolve radiologically.
