Meconium plug syndrome

Case contributed by Ryan Thibodeau
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Neonate born at 31 weeks. Abdominal distension and colic.

Patient Data

Age: 2 days
Gender: Male
Fluoroscopy

The entire colon was normal in caliber for age, without focal narrowing, dilatation, or zone of transition. There were elongated filling defects seen throughout most of the length of the colon, consistent with extensive meconium plugging. Dilated bowel loops were noted proximal to the level of the contrast-filled colon at completion of this study.

Case Discussion

This is a highly suspected case of meconium plug syndrome. The filling defects throughout the majority of the colon likely represent the meconium plug. The overall course following the barium enema was uncomplicated and the patient was discharged several days later.
