Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Inhaled sea-water and lost consciousness. Cough productive of pink frothy sputum.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Lower zone predominant opacity in both lungs compatible with pulmonary edema.

Case Discussion

The patient did not require intubation, and recovered fully following a short inpatient admission for supportive management.

Near-drowning is a cause of non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema.
