Necrotizing enterocolitis with portal venous gas

Presentation

Congenital heart disease. Long-term NICU admission. Abdominal distension.

Patient Data

Age: 70 days
Gender: Male

There is diffuse pneumatosis intestinalis with bowel dilatation and portal venous gas. Numerous lines and tubes project over the abdomen. 

Case Discussion

Portal venous gas in necrotizing enterocolitis is not the fulminant sign as seen in adults.
