Esophageal cancer

Case contributed by Ian Bickle
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Intermittent high dysphagia.

Patient Data

Age: 85 years
Gender: Male
Fluoroscopy

Moderate length mid esophageal stricture with irregular mucosa and shouldering of the proximal end.

Barium-air level in the upper esophagus due to delayed emptying secondary to the stricture.

Case Discussion

Classical appearances of a malignant esophageal stricture due to a primary esophageal malignancy.

Few patients are primarily diagnosed on barium now due to the primary use of endoscopy and the widespread (near default) use of CT for weight loss and most other symptoms.
