Case contributed by Ammar Ashraf
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Pre-employment chest radiograph.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Well-defined bony outgrowth along the superomedial aspect of the left anterior scapula. No active cardiopulmonary abnormality is noted.

13 years later

x-ray

Re-demonstration of well-defined bony outgrowth along the superomedial aspect of the left scapula, which is stable.

ct

CT scan confirms an anteriorly directed well-defined bony outgrowth along the superomedial aspect of the left scapula. The cortex and the medullary cavity of this outgrowth is in continuity with the cortex and the medullary cavity of the parent bone. No osseous destruction or associated soft tissue abnormality is seen. Mild mass effect causing contour deformity is seen in the left upper bony rib cage.

Case Discussion

  • Imaging findings are consistent with osteochondroma of the left scapula.

  • Osteochondromas (exostosis) are the commonest tumors of the scapula and are usually seen along the anterior aspect of the scapula 1,2.  Pseudo-winging of the scapula, bursa formation, snapping syndrome and restricted movements of the shoulder are the different possible complications associated with the osteochondromas seen along the anterior aspect of the scapula 1,2.
