Illustration of the paraumbilical veins. They form an anastomosis with the anterior abdominal wall veins and the hepatic portal system, and become enlarged in portal hypertension. The Sappey veins are also responsible for third inflow areas found adjacent to the falciform ligament within the liver parenchyma.
