Patellar tendon rupture

Presentation

Neglected case of sports injury 3 months prior.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male
mri

The MRI sequences demonstrate:

  • complete rupture of the proximal segment of the patellar tendon with a tendinous gap = 4 cm

  • retracted distal patellar tendon with intrinsic high signal

  • high-riding patella (patella alta)

  •  the medial and lateral patellar retinaculum are thickened with abnormal intrinsic high signal but no evidence of disruption

  • No bony avulsion fracture

  • Moderate joint effusion

  • cruciate and collateral ligaments are intact as well as the posterolateral corner structures and menisci

  • small fibrous cortical defect of the lateral aspect of the distal femoral metaphysis (incidental finding)
