Patellar tendon rupture

Presentation

Tripped and fell onto right knee. Pain.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

The patella is high riding and there is infra-patellar soft tissue swelling suggesting patellar tendon rupture. Irregularity of the inferior pole of the patella is longstanding. No fracture identified.

ultrasound

Significant subcutaneous edema within the region of interest. There is complete absence of fibers in the mid section of the patella tendon 3.6cm from the distal insertion.

Case Discussion

Findings are consistent with patellar tendon rupture with was confirmed and repaired in theater.

Further history from the treating team (after the X-ray was performed) was of failure to straight leg raise.
