Pelvic osteophytes (portable x-ray)

Presentation

COVID-19 patient with pain in hips on walking, no trauma sustained, able to weightbear. ? hairline fracture.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Male

The pelvic rings are preserved with no fracture or dislocation seen. However, background degenerative changes are noted.

Case Discussion

This case is an example of an anteroposterior pelvis view. Although no acute pathology is demonstrated, it is imperative that readers note the chronic pathology (i.e. osteophytes) present.

As the patient had tested positive for COVID-19 and had to be admitted to an isolation ward, they could not be transported to the radiology department for imaging. The x-ray was hence performed by the patient's bedside as a portable radiography examination.

As pelvis x-ray exposures are higher 1-2 than a frontal chest x-ray, methods to reduce radiation scatter to the surrounding during portable radiography in a ward setting include:

  • utilizing a virtual grid
  • placing lead shielding (i.e. lead screens) strategically where the most risk for scatter will be at
