Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay comfirmed a diagnosis of Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia, an opportunistic fungal infection with airborne transmission.
Chest radiography typically shows increasing widespread opacity that can progress to pneumatocele formation.
