Presentation

Acute exacerbation of asthma. New chest pain.

Patient Data

Age: 14 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

There are streaky lucencies projecting over the right hilum and superior mediastinum, extending into the neck. Mild bilateral perihilar peribronchial thickening, consistent with airway inflammation. No dense consolidation in the lungs.

Case Discussion

Children and adolescents with asthma may present with complications related to airway obstruction/narrowing, such as pneumomediastinum, pneumothorax or lung collapse. Superimposed infection leading to bronchopneumonia or lobar pneumonia can also occur.
