Presentation
Staus post left pneumonectomy for lung cancer.
Patient Data
Complete opacification left hemithorax with shift of the mediastinum to the left and elevated left diaphragm. Left sided surgical clips. Central line appropriately positioned.
Post left pneumonectomy.
Case Discussion
The 2 most common reasons for complete opacification of a hemithorax are complete atelectasis of a lung and massive pleural effusion. Patients who have had a pneumonectomy have findings similar to complete atelectasis because both result in decreased volume of the affected hemithorax. The key to distinguishing the 2 possibilities is recognizing post-operative findings like surgical clips in pneumonectomy patients .
