Extension beyond the serosa into the perirectal fat is best appreciated on the T2 non-fat saturated imaging with T2 hypointense linear and nodular extensions demonstrated posteriorly and to the left. Still, the margins are well within the perirectal fascia.

Patient with T3 N1 rectal cancer (pathology proved).
