Presentation

Increased work of breathing. Premature neonate.

The tip of the feeding tube projects over the stomach bubble. Oxygen tubing and a monitoring lead are noted.

The lung volumes are reduced. There are diffuse, fine granular opacities throughout the lungs. No dense consolidation. The cardiothymic contour is within normal limits for the patie

Case Discussion

Premature neonates are at risk of respiratory distress syndrome due to the inability of immature type II pneumocytes to produce surfactant. Lack of surface tension in the alveoli leads to collapse. Infants with RDS often present with respiratory distress and may require supportive ventilation.
