Rupture of a hepatic hydatid cyst

Presentation

Acute abdomen following trauma

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male

Large partially-exophytic hepatic cyst predominantly in the left lobe of the liver, extending to the subphrenic region with endocystic membranes. The wall has discontinuity, with misshapen and irregular margins suggesting rupture of the cyst. There is mass effects on the inferior vena cava.

Moderate to massive ascites.

Hyperenhancing kidneys.

The adrenal glands appear relatively hyperintense.

Case Discussion

The patient was brought to the emergency department, presenting with acute abdomen after a physical fight. The patient was developing signs of shock, and was not showing clinical recovery despite the administration of IV fluid. The CT revealed rupture of the hydatid cyst causing the preestablished anaphylactic shock.
