Sacral meningocele

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Patient with low back pain that started 10 years ago, which increased 3 months ago, with difficulty to walk and reduced muscle strength in the left lower limb. Deny trauma and surgery.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female

Hypoattenuating lesion (isodense to CSF), measuring around 4.7 x 3.5 x 2.6 cm in the sacral medullary canal, enlarging the thecal sac and shifting the neural roots. There are morphological changes in the sacral vertebral bodies consistent with posterior bone remodeling.

Case Discussion

Based on the TC findings the lesion was classified type Ib spinal meningeal cyst.

Occult intrasacral meningocele, or more simply sacral meningocele, is a rare congenital lesion characterized by an extradural arachnoid cyst within the sacral canal, classified as a Nabor type Ib meningeal cyst.
