Presentation

Chronic hematuria since 6 month in a patient known to have schistosoma haematobium by laboratory analysis.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Male

The urinary bladder has thick-walled bladder with curvilinear calcifications.These calcification represent the large numbers of calcified eggs within the bladder wall. It extends to involve the distal aspect of both ureters. The left kidney is seen of small size,atrophic with irregular outlines and dilated collecting system giving a sac like appearance.Its likely represents post chronic pyelonephritis sequel.

 

Case Discussion

There are five species of the schistosoma that cause disease in humans. Schistosoma haematobium is the most common type that infests the urinary systemSchistosomiasis is considered the most common cause of bladder wall calcification. Marked inflammation causes fibrosis and subsequent submucosal calcification of the dead ova that trapped within the lamina propria of the urinary bladder.
