Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Incidental finding during a routine abdominal and pelvic ultrasound for work-up of fever and sepsis.

Patient Data

Age: 4 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

A multiseptated gallbladder that is otherwise normal with no biliary sludge, no well-defined gallstones, no acalculous cholecystitis, no gallbladder polyps, and no adenomyomatosis.

The rest of the ultrasound revealed normal findings.

Case Discussion

An uncomplicated multiseptated gallbladder, with the consequent appearance of multiple compartments. The septa are likely congenital given the young age. This is also unlikely to be a post-inflammatory state in the absence of documented acute or chronic cholecystitis, again this would be unusual in such a young patient and rather possible in an adult patient.

In rare occurrences, patients with a multiseptated gallbladder may suffer from recurrent bouts of abdominal pain and may also develop gallstones1.
