Presentation
Absolute constipation and diffuse abdominal pain.
Patient Data
Spot films from the Gastrografin enema examination showing abrupt cut-off of contrast at the site of obstruction. On AP images, this represents a bird beak appearance. Significant distension of the rectum is noted. No leak of contrast is seen.
Case Discussion
The patient was suspected for sigmoid volvulus on x-ray (unfortunately, not available). Subsequently, Gastrografin enema was performed for therapeutic detorsion of the volvulus. However, therapeutic detorsion by Gastrografin enema was not achieved and the patient underwent sigmoidoscopy which finally relieved the volvulus.
