Subchondral fracture of the medial tibial plateau

Presentation

Acute and persistent on the medial side of the knee without a previous history of trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 75 years
Gender: Female

Subchondral fracture line consistent with subchondral insufficiency fracture in the load-bearing area of the medial tibial with bone marrow edema that extends into the subchondral cortical bone. There is also extrusion of the medial meniscus that shows degenerative features of the posterior horn. Small amount of joint effusion accompanies. The cruciate ligaments, collateral ligaments, and external meniscus are normal.

Case Discussion

The fracture line in subchondral insufficiency fracture of the knee shows low signal in all sequences and represents a fracture callus, collapsed bony trabeculae, reactive cartilage, and granulation tissue.
