Thrombosis of persistent median artery of the forearm

Presentation

Non-traumatic onset of left wrist pain for about last 10 days.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female

There is presence of a persistent median artery flanked by veins. Persistant median artery in carpal tunnel shows echogenic lumen without flow. Veins are compressible. Artery shows flow proximal to carpal tunnel. Arterial division distal to carpal tunnel shows flow by collateral supply. There is no early division of median nerve. Maximum Cross sectional area of median nerve just proximal to tunnel is 9.2 mm2 which is within normal limits. There is no no ganglion cyst / flexure tenosynovitis.

Case Discussion

A young female patient presented with non-traumatic origin of left wrist pain for about last 10 days. Pain once started; never disappeared. Ultrasound shows presence of a persistent median artery which a variant. There is thrombosis of about 30 mm long segment of the artery in carpal tunnel region; causing non-resolving pain in wrist.
