Transient patellar dislocation

Case contributed by Utkarsh Kabra
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Twisting of knee

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male

Bone contusions with marrow edema are seen in the lateral femoral condyle and medial patellar facet.

A partial tear of the medial patellofemoral ligament is seen.

Associated shallow trochlear groove with a hypoplastic medial trochlear facet.

Note is made of a strain of proximal patellar tendon.

Case Discussion

Findings are consistent with transient patellar dislocation. A shallow trochlear groove with a hypoplastic medial trochlear facet (trochlear dysplasia, Dejour type c) predisposes to dislocation.
