Traumatic pneumothorax

Presentation

Left sided chest pain following a fall from a mountain bike.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

On presentation

x-ray

Left side pneumothorax measuring 31mm at maximal apical length. Widening of left rib interspaces. The trachea is central with no evidence of a tension pneumothorax. Right lung is clear.

After 1 week post injury

x-ray

Complete resolution of left pneumothorax that was managed conservatively.

Case Discussion

31 mm left apical pneumothorax managed conservatively. Patient was stable with no oxygen requirements. Pain was well managed and the patient was able to breathe deeply and cough. Discharged on day 3 after injury and reviewed in outpatient clinic 1 week later with repeat CXR demonstrating complete resolution of pneumothorax.
