Presentation
Incidental finding during work-up for lower back pain. There is known previous tubal ligation.
Patient Data
Bilateral non-metallic tubal ligation rings.
There is mild L5/S1 intervertebral disc space reduction, plain films are otherwise unremarkable.
The zoomed and reverse images demonstrate the bilateral tubal ligation rings in the correct anatomical position.
Case Discussion
An example of bilateral non-metallic tubal ligation rings. The rings are called Falope rings and were introduced in 1975 by Yoon and colleagues 1.2.3. The ring is made of medical-grade silicone and has barium sulphate within it to ensure its radio-opacity and easy X-ray identification. They are applied to a looped fallopian tube section, specifically the isthmus. Falope rings represent an example of a non-thermal method of ligation with a potential for reversibility. The rings are applied using a one-time disposable kit which includes an applicator.
