Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Head and neck malignancy. Left renal mass on staging CT. Metastasis or incidental renal cell malignancy?

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Female

4.7cm left mid/lower pole renal mass.

Fatty liver.  Bilateral adrenal gland hypertrophy.

No para-aortic lymphadenopathy.

Well circumscribed left lower pole mass.

18G core biopsy taken.

Case Discussion

Targeted renal mass biopsies are undertaken selectively.  It is not typically performed on assumed renal cell carcinomas prior to surgery.

It is largely reserved for when there is a management influencing decision.

The vast majority are accessible to ultrasound guided biopsy as in this case.
