Age: 19 days
Gender: Male

Irregular bladder margins

Vesicoureteric reflux - tortuous and dilatated ureter and pelvicalyceal system on the right (grade 5); left ureter is tortuous and moderately dilated, yet the renal collecting system is preserved (grade 3)

Case Discussion

Many conditions may cause reflux from the bladder into the upper urinary tract. The vesicoureteric reflux in the case was attributed to posterior urethral valves observed on a urinary tract ultrasound study performed at 14 days of life.

Posterior urethral valves (PUV) are the most common congenital obstructive lesion of the urethra and a common cause of urinary tract obstruction in newborns.

Urinary tract obstructions are a predisposing factor to urinary tract infections.
