Incidental finding during CTPA scan for exclusion of acute postpartum pulmonary thromboembolism.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female

Arterial phase CTPA demonstrates a normal and heterogeneous hepatic and splenic enhancement in this postpartum patient.

The spleen has particularly dramatic alternating bands of high and low density resembling the stripes of a zebra.

Case Discussion

A case of the typical archiform appearance of the spleen resembling zebra stripes due to the normal heterogeneous enhancement pattern during arterial phase imaging. In this instance, the study was a CT pulmonary arteriogram for the exclusion of postpartum thromboembolism.

From a neuroradiology perspective, the appearance resembles the serpentine morphology of cerebral gyri!
