What is the incidence of horseshoe kidney? What is the relevance of horseshoe kidney in trauma?
It has an incidence of ~0.25%. Horseshoe kidney predisposes to traumatic injury, due to the isthmus being located anterior to the vertebral column.
- Persistent extensive retroperitoneal / renal intracapsular haematoma is identified, with only minimal enlargement when compared to previous
- Contusion / infarction of the left renal lower pole possibly secondary to renovascular injury
- Small volume of excreted contrast extravasation near the inferior right renal pole raises the possibility of injury to the collecting system
- Small volume of free intraperitoneal fluid.
