Basilar artery thrombosis

Discussion:

Uncommon and in most cases fatal, basilar artery thrombosis is a devastating diagnosis.

The diagnosis may be difficult and need close clinico-radiological correlation.  In this case, the end organ damage is already apparent.

Infarction is shown in the most graphic of manners demonstrating the distribution of all branches of the basilar artery.

The basilar artery is also dense in keeping with the hyperdense artery sign, due to thrombus within, a phenomenon more commonly observed in MCA thrombosis.
