Penetrating atherosclerotic ulcers form when atheromatous plaques erode. The resulting ulcer penetrates the intima, progresses into the media and may result to intramural hematoma formation. Accompanying noncalcified and calcified atheromatous plaques result to irregular or undulating surface along the aortic lumen wall.
