Paraesophageal hernias a.k.a. rolling hernias, are an uncommon type of hiatal hernia accounting for ~10% of all hiatal hernias. Surgery is suggested when medical therapy fails to regulate symptoms of gastro-esophageal reflux that may be associated with paraesophageal hernias, or when there is an emergent complication.
