The vertebral artery gives rise to the posterior inferior cerebellar artery which then supplies also the ipsilateral lateral and posterior aspect of the medulla.

The symptoms of the lateral medullary syndrome include vestibulocerebellar symptoms, autonomic dysfunction and ipsilateral bulbar muscle weakness.
