Gastroschisis is a congenital abdominal wall defect without a covering membrane occurring in approximately 5 in 10,000 live births.

Risk factors for the development of this defect include:

• young maternal age
• low BMI
• race
• smoking 
• low socioeconomic status
• recreational drug use
• alcohol consumption during pregnancy

The survival rate for infants born with gastroschisis is approximately 90%, but it is associated with significant morbidity due to prolonged hospital stay, late oral feeding, multiple surgeries, prolonged ventilation, prolonged parenteral nutrition (TPN), and other neonatal complications (short bowel syndrome, necrotizing enterocolitis).

The mean gestational age at diagnosis is 20 +/- 7.0 gestational weeks.
