Microtia: grade III

Discussion:

Microtia is a congenital deformity of the pinna, which has a wide spectrum of abnormality.

Microtia is graded from I - IV. In grade III there is an absence of the external ear with a small peanut like vestige structure and an absence of the external ear canal and ear drum.

As in this case it is common (close to 50%) to have an absense of the ossicles of the middle ear.

Surgical recontruction may be either allographic - usually with the use of costal cartilage or alloplastic.

The commonest procedures (or modifications of) are the Brent and Nagata, which involve several steps.
