•Stroke is an acute clinical event by definition, presenting with sudden loss of cerebral functions caused by brain ischemia, brain hemorrhage, or so-called stroke mimics. Major artery ischemic stroke is caused by an embolic or in situ stenosis or occlusion of the internal carotid artery (ICA); the anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral artery ; the vertebral artery or basilar artery (BA) by a variety of vascular diseases.
•Statistically, brain ischemia is four times more frequent than brain hemorrhage, so the probability that stroke is caused by cerebral blood flow (CBF) impairment is about 80%. It is, however, impossible to safely differentiate ischemic stroke from brain hemorrhage (hemorrhagic stroke) based on clinical symptoms alone.
