Air gap technique

Diagram

Diagram representing the air gap technique, used to reduce scatter.

The air gap between the patient and the detector in B is greater compared to A, reducing the amount of scattered photons which contact the detector.

The trade off is that the patient will receive increased dose, as they are located closer to the photon source.
