Presentation

Right lower mid tibia-fibula raised lump, swelling post playing football. Bony tenderness.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

A well-defined radiolucent lesion is demonstrated in the right tibial diaphysis with a ground-glass appearance, endosteal thinning of the cortex, and some ballooning of the shaft. No periosteal reaction is seen.

Another smaller, mildly sclerotic focus is noted at the proximal tibial shaft.

mri

A well-defined T1 isointense and T2 low signal intensity focus at the mid-shaft of the tibia, owing to the high content of collagen and bone, without any aggressive features.

A small similar signal intensity focus is noted at the proximal tibia.

Case Discussion

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a developmental benign medullary fibro-osseous process characterized by the failure to form mature lamellar bone and arrest as woven bone, which can be multifocal.

It can affect any bone and occur in a monostotic form involving only one bone or a polyostotic form involving multiple bones.
