Presentation
Wood splinter injury to right middle finger dorsum - two days ago. Local pain and swelling.
Patient Data
A linear echogenic focus (2 mm) with acoustic shadow in the dorsal subcutaneous plane at the PIP joint level. Another faintly echogenic focus (3 mm) with acoustic shadow adjacent to it. Local soft tissue edema without abscess.
Intact extensor tendon. No joint effusion.
Soft tissue edema involving the PIP region. Skin marking for two foreign bodies.
Two foreign bodies were retrieved by surgical exploration.
Case Discussion
The case shows wood splinter foreign bodies in the finger. Ultrasound shows a foreign body as an echogenic focus with/ without acoustic shadowing. However, acoustic shadowing is more prominent than echogenicity in one of the foreign bodies in this case.
