The patient presented with chronic watery diarrhea and was admitted to the gastrointestinal ward for further evaluation. The patient had a history of VP shunt placement several months ago.
Patient Data
Colonoscopy images reveal intraluminal VP shunt perforating the colonic wall into the lumen.
Case Discussion
A 40-year-old male patient presented with watery diarrhea for 1 month and was admitted to the gastrointestinal ward for further evaluation. There was history of VP shunt placement several months ago. A non-contrast CT abdomen was advised, which revealed migration of the shunt into redundant sigmoid colon. Findings were confirmed on colonoscopy. Shunt erosion of the bowel wall and migration into the intestines is a rare complication (0.1 to 0.7% of abdominal complications) and is more common in the pediatric population.
