Presentation

Painful scoliosis.

Patient Data

Age: 12 years
Gender: Male
mri

Dorsolumbar scoliosis of right-sided convexity centered at T12. An expansile lesion (22x19 mm) of the left lamina is noted and appears of low-signal on T1 and T2 with a central area of decreased signal intensity. Note high-signal T2 with enhancement of the surrounding bone marrow of T12 and L1 as well as the adjacent left paravertebral soft tissue due to edema.

ct

The CT scan was performed after the MRI. The previously described lesion on MRI appears as a lytic area with a central calcification and surrounding reactive sclerosis extending to the T12 and L1 vertebral bodies.

Case Discussion

Radiological appearances of vertebral osteoblastoma. CT scan is less sensitive than MRI, but more specific especially for the visualization of the internal matrix mineralization. MRI is more sensitive in detection of the lesion as well as the edematous infiltration of the bone marrow and adjacent soft tissue.
