Presentation
Worsening of recurrent cough.
Patient Data
Portable frontal radiograph of the chest demonstrating a mass with internal calcifications in the left lower lobe.
Solitary cavitary mass within the left lower lobe which contains air, fluid and calcifications. The mass abuts the pleura with associated pleural thickening. The local bronchi have thickened walls.
Case Discussion
A history of overseas travel and exposure to unsanitary conditions and animal droppings was obtained.
Intralesional gas and bronchial wall thickening indicate airway communication.
Broncho-alveolar lavage demonstrated positive echinococcus titers. The patient was subsequently started on albendazole and later underwent a muscle-sparing thoracotomy with left lower lobectomy.
