Presentation
Patient presented to the ER with chest pain, shortness of breath, hemoptysis and decrease level of consciousness.
Patient Data
the left lower lobar pulmonary artery and its segmental and subsegmental branches show filling defects suggesting pulmonary embolism associated with wedge-shaped bubbly opacity involving most of the left lower lobe suggestive of left lower lobe pulmonary infarction.
enlarged heart size with pericardial effusion
multiple scattered patchy areas of ground glass opacities
thick-walled cavity with internal septation
parenchymal fibrotic bands
resolution of the left pulmonary embolism, right and left atrial thrombus
Case Discussion
This case highlights pulmonary cavitation as a sequela of large pulmonary infarction.
Thus, pulmonary infarction should be considered as a potential cause of cavitary lung lesions.
