Septic arthritis of the sternoclavicular joint with abscess formation
Presentation
Two months postpartum, presented with left side upper chest wall swelling which increased in size over 2 weeks. Otherwise, the patient was well and healthy.
Patient Data
Cortical loss, resorption, and erosions at the medial end of the clavicle at the left sternoclavicular joint. Associated sternoclavicular joint and periarticular slightly dense collection/soft tissue with stranding and smudging of the surrounding fat planes.
Abnormal left sternoclavicular joint showing extensive bone marrow edema at both articular sides (sternal and clavicular) associated with intra-articular and a large periarticular collection/phlegmon with post-contrast bone marrow enhancement as well as thick wall enhancement of the collection.
Edema and intramuscular collection along the pectoralis muscle.
Case Discussion
The combined radiological findings of both CT and MRI imaging suggest an inflammatory process involving the left sternoclavicular (monoarticular) joint associated with intra and periarticular collection/phlegmon. The pathology lab results confirmed the inflammatory process.
