Presentation
Young woman had her right wrist radiograph taken for wrist pain following road traffic accident.
Patient Data
Type 2 capitohamate coalition of right wrist is found. No fracture or dislocation is seen. This was incidental finding, and the patient was asymptomic.
Case Discussion
The capitohamate coalition is the second most common type of carpal coalition after lunotriquetral coalition. They are often asymptomatic, and the diagnosis is often made incidentally by wrist radiographs taken for various other indications.
Carpal coalitions can be divided into four subtypes;
- Type 1 - incomplete with pseudoarthrosis
- Type 2 - fusion with a notch between the fused bones
- Type 3 - complete
- Type 4 - complete with other anomalies
Carpal coalitions can occur in isolation, or they can be part of other syndromic conditions especially when there is involvement of more than two carpal bones or bridging of two different carpal rows.
